History

The story of
Winter Park

Winter Park was founded in the 1880s as a winter resort for wealthy northerners, and its early development was heavily influenced by New England transplants who brought an emphasis on education, culture, and civic planning. Rollins College, Florida's oldest college, was founded here in 1885. The city's tree-lined streets, brick-paved roads, and chain of lakes were carefully preserved through the 20th century, giving Winter Park a character unlike any other Central Florida community. Park Avenue has been the city's commercial and social center for over a century, and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum houses the world's most comprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany works.
