History
The story of
St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg was founded in the 1880s by John Williams, a Detroit transplant, and Peter Demens, a Russian émigré who brought the railroad. The city marketed itself as 'The Sunshine City' and became a major winter tourism destination by the early 1900s. The Green Benches that lined Central Avenue were an iconic symbol of the city's retiree culture. After a long period of decline through the late 20th century, St. Petersburg reinvented itself beginning in the 2000s. The opening of the Dali Museum in 2011, the growth of the EDGE District, and a wave of restaurant and brewery openings transformed the city into one of the South's most exciting urban destinations.
