History

The story of
Parrish

Parrish was named for Crawford Parrish, a cattleman and farmer who settled in northern Manatee County in the late 1800s. For generations it was a quiet agricultural community built on cattle ranching, tomato and vegetable farming, and the railroad that ran through the region — a heritage still celebrated by the Florida Railroad Museum, which operates heritage train rides through the countryside. Parrish stayed rural well into the 21st century, but the extension of infrastructure along the I-75 corridor and the northward march of development from Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch sparked dramatic growth in the 2010s and 2020s. Today Parrish is one of Manatee County's fastest-growing areas, adding master-planned communities and new schools while working to preserve its small-town character.
