History
The story of
Apollo Beach
Apollo Beach was created in the 1960s by developer Francis Corr, who dredged canals out of the mangrove flats along Tampa Bay to build a planned waterfront community with boat access for nearly every home. The space-age name reflected the era's fascination with the Apollo program. For decades it remained a quiet boating and retirement enclave, but the community saw renewed growth in the 2000s and 2010s as new master-planned neighborhoods and waterfront developments attracted families and professionals. The nearby Big Bend Power Station gave rise to an unexpected local landmark — the Manatee Viewing Center, where manatees gather each winter in the plant's warm-water discharge canal.
